The Next Step: World Copernican Congress in Olsztyn

Nicolaus Copernicus' biography, museum and conservation issues dedicated to memorabilia associated with the astronomer's work and achievements are the main topics of the third part of the World Copernican Congress, which will be held from 21 to 24 June at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

Nicolaus Copernicus spent particular stages of his life in various places in Poland. His footsteps are being followed by the World Copernican Congress, which, after its February inauguration in Toruń and the May events in Kraków, will move to Warmia, where the world-famous researcher spent around 40 years. It will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the facts of the eminent scientist's life and methods of researching and preserving what remains of his work.

The Olsztyn part of the World Copernican Congress will be inaugurated by the lecture "An Astronomer and His Castles: The Scientist as Public Servant in Copernicus's Era and Our Own", given by Prof. Karl Galle (Washington, USA).

In the following days, Congress participants will take part in deliberations, which will be held in two sections.

The Biography Section will open with the theme "Youth and Education of Nicolaus Copernicus". The remainder part of the section will focus on the life and work of Nicolaus Copernicus and has been divided into a number of thematic and discussion panels (e.g. "The Discovery of Nicolaus Copernicus' Tomb - Media or Scientific Fact?").

The second section will be devoted to museum and conservation topics. It will address both the material legacy of Copernicus and efforts to protect and promote memorabilia associated with him.

During the Olsztyn part, the World Copernican Congress will "step out" from the walls of the University of Warmia and Mazury. Participants in the event will have the opportunity to become better acquainted with places connected with the life and work of Copernicus in Warmia. Therefore, the proceedings will also be held in places along the Copernicus Trail, i.e. the Museum of Warmia and Mazury in the castle in Olsztyn and the castle in Lidzbark Warmiński.

In line with the good tradition developed by the organisers of the Toruń and Kraków parts of the World Copernican Congress, an artistic tribute to Nicolaus Copernicus will also be paid in Olsztyn. Several concerts and other attractions are planned during the event.

On Saturday (24 June), the campus of the University of Warmia and Mazury will host the Copernican Festival. The events that are part of the Festival will not only fit in with the idea of the World Copernican Congress but will also serve as a symbolic welcome to the summer holidays.

The full program for the Olsztyn part of the World Copernican Congress is available on the website.

Participation in the World Copernican Congress is free of charge, but registration is required.
