The 'History of astronomy' section

About the section

The conference "Copernicus and Astronomy: Continuity, Reform, and Dissemination" will be held in Toruń from 11 to 16 September 2023. It is organized as part of the World Copernican Congress celebrating the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, and hosted by Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Institute of History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and the Polish Astronomical Society. The Congress will include a sequence of scientific conferences held in Kraków (May 24-26, 2023), Olsztyn (June 21-24, 2023), and Toruń (September 11-16, 2023).    

The conference, organized by the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, aims to review the state of research on pre-Copernican astronomy, the Copernican astronomy and its early reception. It will consist of three panels: 1. The legacy of Ptolemy's astronomy and the Alphonsine Tables; 2. Copernican astronomy; and 3. The early reception of heliocentric astronomy. 50 scholars from around the world will attend the conference.
