Copernicus and astronomy

The last part of the World Copernican Congress is fast approaching. The proceedings in Toruń are going to begin on 12 September 2023 and will be held in six thematic sessions. The program and details about the first of those sessions are presented below.

The session of the history of astronomy, entitled “Copernicus and Astronomy: Continuity, Reform, and Dissemination”, is an international conference organised by the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The aim of the conference is to examine the state of research on pre-Copernican astronomy as well as Copernican astronomy and its early reception. It will consists of three thematic panels:

  • The heritage of Ptolemean astronomy and Alfonsine tables
  • Copernican astronomy
  •  Early reception of heliocentric astronomy

Each of the panels will start with plenary lectures given by the special guests: Professor F. Jamil Ragep (Professor Emeritus, Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University), Professor Michael Shank (Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Professor Robert S. Westman (Professor Emeritus, University of California San Diego).
